Thrift Shop Quarterly Estate Sale
Friday, May 25 at 8am at Freeport Community Center

Do some Spring cleaning! Clean out your basement, garage or attic and bring all your good “stuff” to the Freeport Community center: furniture, bikes, sporting goods, clothing, books, home furnishings, collectibles, toys, you-name-it! Donating to the Thrift Shop is a great way to recycle and reuse items that may otherwise sit and gather dust.

Thrift Shop sales are important and FUN fundraisers for Freeport Community Services. All proceeds go directly into FCS programs.

Cooking Class: Mexican Chicken Soup with Lindsay Sterling

I can’t wait to teach you how to make chicken soup the Mexican way! A mom in Yarmouth who’s from Mexico taught me how to make it. To make the broth a gorgeous red, you add blended mild chili peppers. Chunks of chicken and potatoes make this good ol’ comfort food. Spice level is mild (my six your old loves it) or spicy (if you’re like me and eat the dried chipotles floating on top). Oxfam Style Community Meal, May 3rd

The Oxfam Style Community Dinner is proudly planned by Dana Anderson’s Freeport High School AP English class. The class has discussed topics ranging from “Climbing the Socio-economic Ladder” to “The Locavore Food Movement” to “Marine Biodiversity” – and everything in between. The students expressed an interest in broadening the audience for our conversations – and the dinner is the result. The evening will be a combination of food, dialogue, artwork, and (their) musical performance.

All proceeds benefit Freeport Community Services and Oxfam

First Friday Chamber ME Music Concert, May 4th

First Friday Chamber ME Music Series continues this week in Freeport: please join in for a classical concert on Friday May 4th. Series organizer Jon Poupore has invited area musicians to perform classical chamber music masterpieces. Also featured are long-forgotten treasures of the 19th century by composers such as Herzenbogen, Vanhal, Sauzay, Ries, and Volkmann. You will hear string trios, quartets, and quintets, and works with piano. Guest woodwind artists will also add their talents. The program lasts an hour and is free. Donations are happily accepted. Thank you EVERYONE for coming to Ben & Jerry’s yesterday to enjoy a free cone and make generous contributions to the FCS Summer Camp Scholarship Fund. Thanks to you, we raised over $2,000. This money will go directly into our fund to help children in Freeport and Pownal have a summer camp experience. Thank you – and please thank our friend John Luttrell, Store Manager of Ben & Jerry’s, for his generous support. FCS could not do it without him – and that delicious ice cream.

Jon Poupore organizes and performs with Chamber ME Music Series, a free classical chamber music series that runs year-round, that often features PSO musicians. Every first Friday at the Freeport Community Center, and the following day at the River Tree Arts Center in Kennebunk.

Cooking Class: Eritrean Chicken with Lindsay Sterling

On Friday April 13, Lindsay Sterling will be teaching interested participants how to cook what she considers the best chicken dish in the world: Eritrean Chicken.

Asmeret, the head chef and owner of Asmara, an Eritrean Restaurant in Portland, Maine taught her this gem. The secret ingredients are onions, ghee, and berbere spice. Eritrea, by the way, is next to Ethiopia in Africa (see map)

If you can’t come to the lesson, but would like to try making the dish in your own kitchen, Lindsay has made a bunch of cooking kits with instructions. They’re $7.99 and can be picked up at her house in Freeport, or she can mail one to you. Contact her if you’re interested.
