Freeport First Fridays Concert: Not Too Shaap, May 3rd

Join us for this popular acoustic group and you’ll know why it’s a local favorite. Their repertoire of “some things old, some things new, some things borrowed and a little blues” includes great classics and moving original songs. We’re happy to have their harmonies back for our final First Friday of the season. Not Too Shaap includes: Ellen Ebert, Jane Bradley, Daric Ebert, Tod Donahue, and Chris Nichols.

Tickets for Freeport First Fridays are $18, which includes the concert at 6pm in the Freeport Community Center followed by a 3-course, home-cooked dinner at 7pm (BYOB).

FCS Thrift Shop Annex – Expanded Hours

The Freeport Community Services Thrift Shop Annex is so popular that we’ve expanded our hours to include Wednesdays too! Come visit our “permanent” Estate Sale at 48B West Street, right behind the When Pigs Fly Bakery. Our space is freshly painted and filled with furniture, lighting, antiques and other collectibles. We add new items daily. Visit our Thrift Shop at the Community Center too for clothing, footwear, books, toys, collectibles, etc.

Freeport & Pownal Community Night, April 25 @6:30pm, FCC

Join in Community Night on April 25th at 6:30pm at the Freeport Community Center for a community discussion and opportunity to share your thoughts and ideas.

The tradition of Community Night began in the 70’s to create a forum for citizens to express concerns and bring change. The Summer Camp Scholarship Program, Family Life Support Group, and D.A.R.E. program were a direct result of this annual gathering. More recently, Community Night input was the motivation for starting the Tolerance and Respect Project (TARP), which is creating more awareness of bullying and has been responsible for Laptop Evenings for parents, a 9th grade community-building retreat at the FHS, and a panel on Community Safety following the school shooting in Newtown, CT.

Please put April 25th on your calendar NOW. Everyone is welcome. There will be snacks and socializing from 6:30-7pm and our experienced and fun moderator, Lesa Andreason, will lead us in a discussion of programs that support the community and help us identify what is lacking for our citizens. Your voice and ideas are important.

Ben & Jerry’s Cone Day Raises $1575 for FCS Summer Camp Scholarship Fund

The Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day on April 9th, 2013 brought very exciting news for the children of Freeport and Pownal. We raised $1575 for our Summer Camp Scholarship Fund!! FCS thanks all the scoopers, the staff, the jar “shakers” and others who made the Ben and Jerry’s day such a success. We also thank the Nordica Theatre for placing jars in their lobby to collect $125 in donations for FCS programs as well.

If you would like to contribute towards our FCS Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, please send a donation to FCS, PO Box 119, Freeport, ME 04032 or stop by the office on Depot Street at the Freeport Community Center.

FCS and the Summer Camp Scholarship Committee thank Jon and Carrie Lattrell at our local Freeport Ben and Jerry’s for giving us this opportunity once again to raise money for our local boys and girls.

First Friday Concert – Swing into Spring, April 5th

MASISTA, Maryellen And Sam In Support of The Arts, is pleased to present April’s Freeport First Friday concert/dinner at the Freeport Community Center featuring the mellow tones of Randy Roy accompanied by the magic keyboard of Flash Allen. The date is April 5th; concert at 6pm followed by a 3-course, home-cooked dinner at 7pm (BYOB). Tickets are $18 and seating is limited. 865-3985 x202 – and reserve your spot.

Randy Roy has been a favorite Freeport vocalist since 1989 with his role in “Hold On Molly”, Freeport Community Players’ very first show. Randy has since sung many roles for the Players, among them General Bullmoose (Lil’ Abner), Victor Velasco (Barefoot in the Park), Benny Van Buren (Damn Yankees), King Balthazar (Amahl and the Night Visitors), and (our favorites) “Sonny Bono” in The Players’ tribute to the Carol Burnette Show and his many crooner solos in RADIO. Randy especially enjoys singing the great American jazz and swing standards.

Larry “Flash” Allen is known and loved throughout Maine’s theater and music scenes, recently playing for the FCP/Omni production of “Chanson”, a tribute to the music of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel. An award-winning musician, Flash also loves the jazz genre and classic standards of the 20th century, frequently performing with his wife, Tina, and his band, “Shadow Play”.

Randy and Flash have appeared in a number of venues, including The Village Inn in Belgrade Lakes, Kennebunkport Inn, and Solo Bistro in Bath. Randy and Flash will be performing at the Village Inn again on June 8th.

2013 Summer Camp Fair, March 26

2013 Summer Camp Fair: March 26th, Mast Landing School, 5:30-7:30pm
The FCS Camp Scholarship Committee will host our 25th Annual Summer Camp Fair and Parent information evening for March 26. Another fun summer is coming! We’ve been raising and saving money since last summer so that 80-90 local boys and girls will have the opportunity to have a summer camp experience. Our local children will attend 20 different overnight and day camps in Maine. Some of the day camps include: FRCE, Casco Bay “Y” Camp, L.L. Bean and Wolfe’s Neck Farm Camp. Join in!

FreezeOut: Warms our Communities

The 2013 Annual Food & Fuel FreezeOut surpassed it’s goal this year by raising $12,000 and collecting 800 pounds of food for the Carol Kaplan Fuel Fund and the FCS Food Pantry. Sue Mack, FCS Family Services Coordinator, and her trusty cohorts Paula O’Brien and Patti Bruce, braved a cold, wintry 24 hours, February 16-17, to raise awareness, collect money, and gather food donations. Volunteers, including local high school students and Boy Scout Troop #58 jumped in to help too. This annual event is an important reminder there are many residents in Freeport and Pownal who do not choose to be cold and who are often in the very difficult position of having to choose between paying for fuel or food. Thank you also to the generous support of lead sponsors, WindPoint Foundation, Martin’s Point Health Care Services and Norway Savings Bank.
